“Seattle’s hottest new paranormal romance is: ‘Awooooo!’ This book has everything: friends-to-lovers, matriarchal werewolf societies, and murder.”

Plus! It’s written by one of tumblr’s own bi-con authors: @deweymydecimal

But seriously, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! My understanding is that this series will be a love letter not only to werewolves and their mythos, but also the cities that shelter them. Well, as someone who has lived in Seattle for more than a decade, the author nails the ambience of this strange, technically-advanced backwater. Seattle is definitely a city where the old-world has an uneasy alliance with the new, which also perfectly describes how the werewolf dens of this fictional world relate to each other. I know, it may be odd for a romance-book review to focus so heavily on the setting, but it adds SO MUCH to the story, and is something that I rarely see other romance novels do well (if at all).

Now, how’s the sex I hear you ask? STEAMY, a little KINKY, and with just the right amount of bestiality. I am a sucker for a well-executed friends-to-lover relationship, and this book does not disappoint! Technically, it’s a friends-to-lovers-to-enemies-to-friends-to-lovers loop, which (imho) makes the hook-ups emotionally gratifying (as well as a total turn-on).

Also, let’s talk character dynamics: the ladies ROCK in this one, y'all. They have the power, but they’re also complex, charming, terrifying, and really damn charismatic. I also like how Marcus (our main man) was a badass, but also squishy/sweet on the inside.

Hmmmm, what else can I say? If you like your paranormal romance with a slice of murder mystery, than this book is for you! There are some serious JD Robb vibes, and the inherent danger of crime just makes things that much more titillating, ya’ know? I’m over the moon (I had to sneak one pun in there) about this book, and can’t wait for the next one in the series!!!

While nothing can compare to Rian Johnson’s comedic and unique Knives Out mysteries, there are many books that can tide a fan over until film #3. Below are a few of my recent favorites, including Johnson’s own inspiration, Agatha Christie.

image

The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley - 4.5/5 - A group of friends gather for New Year’s in the Scottish mountains, when one of them turns up dead and only a guest of the resort could have done it. Intriguing characters, lots of juicy drama between old friends, and a whodunit that’ll leave you guessing to the end.

If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio - 4/5 - The lives of drama students from a tight-knit prestigious art school get flipped upside down when a student is found drowned after a startling performance. While it appears to be an accident, actors can make good liars, and the detectives aren’t here for the show.

The Appeal by Janice Hallett - 3.5/5 - A local theater group is raising money for a young girls medical treatment, and when a cast member dies, everyone’s personal drama gives them motive. Since the story is told entirely in email & text messages, we only have each character’s side of things to go by, but conflicting takes and personal opinions give this novel an interesting edge.

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie - 5/5 - From the Queen of Mystery herself, her most famous standalone work. Ten strangers are invited to an island by a mysterious host, and are slowing killed off with striking similarity to an old children’s rhyme (very old, very “a product of it’s time”). The novel itself is timeless, with a twist that left me shocked for days.

Happy reading!

you have to pretend to be a wizard sometimes, for your health. the obvious method is d&d, but you can also open the dishwasher on cold mornings and raise your arms dramatically as you’re enveloped in the steam, or you can find a really good stick to walk around in the woods with, or you can run a bizarrely dedicated rp blog on tumblr. but it’s an important component of human well being to occasionally pretend to be a wizard.
